Breakfast....To skip or not to skip
How many times have you heard the phrase “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”? Yet, how many of us say “I don’t have time”, “I’ll grab something later” or “I couldn’t possibly eat that early in the morning”. Wrong, wrong and wrong. Eating breakfast will help you lose weight and skipping it will not.
The word breakfast is a combination of the words break and fast. It breaks the fasting your body does following the meal you had the night before. When you wake up, your body is empty and needs fuel to get you through the morning. Go without and by lunchtime you’re tired, you lack concentration and won’t perform as well at work or at school. This will also make you more tempted to just grab something quick to see you through the morning, which usually ends up being something high in sugar and unhealthy, whereas eating breakfast helps to stabilise blood sugar levels, which control your appetite and energy.
If you’re trying to lose weight, skipping breakfast is not going to help, not only because of the added temptation to snack on unhealthy foods, but also because breakfast turns your body into a more efficient fat-burning machine as it boosts your metabolism. Each time you eat, enzymes in your body's cells break down the food and turn it into energy that keeps you functioning. The faster your metabolism, the more calories you burn, regardless of what you do. The more calories you burn, the easier it is to lose weight and not put it back on.
